Burn down this cottage
Check around your work place. Do they have the labor law posters? The minimum wage, nondiscrimination, fair treatment, etc, etc. They are required by law, and the employer can be fined for not having them posted.
This is all fine and dandy. All of the various notices are available for free on the web if you know where to look. If not, or you are just plain lazy, you can order an 'all-in-one' poster. Sounds cool, huh?
These all-in-one's seem to have a cottage industry built around them. And since new notices must be posted as issued, these companies that make the all-in-one's don't waste any time in notifying every customer they have ever had (and some they've never had) about the 'new' requirements. Where I work, we get an average of two notices every week. One was nice enough to tell me what had changed (most don't), so I headed to the website and downloaded the notice from the state's website.
I just saved the company a few hundred dollars. Each one of the all-in-one's cost over $50 depending on which company you order from. A trip to the internet, priceless (and virtually free).

Another weekend down the crapper
Yesterday, my entire goal was to get the car inspected. Since February is a short month, I had less time then people in other months do. I hit Johney's in Mashpee and the guy, the regular guy who knows everyone without knowing actual names, said the machine was down, as was the one at Johney's in Falmouth. Drats! He suggested I try another shop, but warned me it didn't look good. I started to pick my brain. Where else was there an inspection station opened on Saturday? Ah-ha, I thought, there is a Sunoco in Centerville that does inspections. I remembered because that's where I saw the big sign and thought the red sticker was going to clash a little less then the ugly green that I have now. After a stop at the post office from hell, I zipped into Centerville. Same story there, sticker machine down. After that, I knew that it was the state side of the inspection and stickering system that had failed.
Of course, now I'm stuck on rte 28 in Centerville. I took a right turn out of the station, because a left is like committing suicide, and shifted lanes to turn left onto Phinneys Lane. Off of Phinneys I took another left onto Great Marsh. A left onto Old Stage, then another left onto Race Lane. Finally, after all those lefts, a right onto 28 and my trip home.
Phew!
A stop at the Halt&Store for British muffins and a gander through the frozen food isle. For some odd reason, I think the chocolate milk for breakfast, but I had a craving for frozen veges. Told you it was odd. But Little Sprout brand was on sale so I picked up two bags. I know, frozen butter sauce is bad, but hey, if it gets me to eat veggies, I'll consider it a wash.
I had just enough time to stop at the post office from heaven, but the parking lot was packed with people who had no clue how to park. See those lines? You car is suppose to be between them, not centered on top of them. Realizing I had no time, or parking space and patience to deal with fellow customers acting like idiots, I departed without stopping. Any mailing I have to do will just have to wait.
So far the frozen veggies have been good, though I've only eaten the roasted potatoes. I may try more this evening once the pizza is all digested.
I'm trying to work on my cabin fever. Took a nice afternoon stroll with Diez. Unfortunately there is no room to walk on the side of the road, so the possibility of getting squished is too high to really enjoy the walk. I also rounded up some things for Southern Snowbird Watch Commander's care package. He's the only person I know that would ask for a bench grinder as a care package item.
Now that the sun is down, and the temp has again dropped below freezing, I'm reminded about why I'm feeling so down this winter. No one has asked me to go tubing. Come on people, live a little! And bring me along!

how about you?
Did you ever notice how there's no new news on the weekends? It's almost like the world sorta stops spinning, and all the reporters bag in sick. The morning news is recycled all day, even on the 24 hour cable channels.
Maybe I should go out and do something stupid. No one would ever know, since there is no new news on the weekends. Hey, aren't the supermarket banks open today? Hmmm...

Tired
I'm tired of winter.
I'm tired of having to bundle up just to go outside. Something as simple as checking the mail becomes a production. Earmuffs, scarf coat, hat, gloves, boots, outer coat, and a coat for Diezel. It's ridiculous and driving me insane. I haven't been able to go wandering through the woods in months because the snow never seems to melt. It's never ending dreariness.
Next year, I say when that groundhog comes out for a peek, we kill it.

One of FIVE!
I googled my name again last night. Hey, a quiet Friday night, what else is there to do?
I noticed that previous search results were no longer listed, and new ones appeared. I found this odd. You would think Google would just keep adding information, not purging old and replacing with new. I did check, and the old search resulting pages still existed, google just wasn't coughing them up.
What the new results showed was I am not just one of four, but one of FIVE people with the same name. Damn, they always say everyone has a 'twin' out there, but this is rediculous. Fortunately, so far, all these other people that stole borrowed are using my name are on the west coast, so I won't be moving out there any time soon. (not that I was looking to move anyway)

Scare
The other day, Sunday I think, I cleaned a bunch of garbage out of my purse. Things like receipts, sticky notes, and envelopes of junk mail. I don't have a big purse. Fast forward to last night. I needed gas for my putt-putt mobile. I stopped at Cumbies and searched my now emptied purse for my check card. I'm so addicted to my visa check card. I've had them since they first came out. I think BayBank was still around back then. Anyway, I couldn't find it. I had my debit card, but there was a sticker on the pump saying that some banks required a hold of $50 for up to 72 hours when using a debit card. Yikes, that's asking a lot. So I hit the button for 'pay inside'. I figured I could plead my case, or in the very extreme, be a drive off customer. After pumping my $17+ worth of gas, I went inside to pay.
I hate to feed the stereotype, but the guys running the Cumbies were EXACTLY what I expected to find. They were more then happy to help me complete my purchase using my debit card. Since my final price was known, I wouldn't end up with the hold on my account. The cashier swiped my card and handed it back to me. I then was asked to type my pin into this little pin pad thing that was flashing my total. After all that, I was then asked to sign a slip, like it was a credit card. I'm not sure if I should be happy about all this security, or worried about possible fraud & identity theft. Either way, I'm watching my account like a hawk. Then again, there ain't much there to take.
But it all begged the question, where the crap was my Visa check card?? (and the purpose of this post...)
Back at home and the contents of the mostly empty purse were emptied onto the table.
- Digital camera, check.
- Wallet & Palm, check
- Fuji jump drive, check
- Spanish change purse, check
- Stupermarket shopping cards, check
- Dunkins recharge card, check
- Visa check card, uncheck
Other then the fact I carry WAY too many electronics in one purse, the whole reason to empty it out was not appearing.
So I backed away from the table.
Returning to the scene of the first purge done many days ago, I went through each receipt, each scrap of paper, every partially sticky sticky note. Then there, wedged among the folds of a receipt from the UPS store, I found it!!
While I'm still fearful of my debit card information being in the wild thanks to the strange Cumbies incident, I no longer have to stress about the Visa check card being MIA. Aren't you glad you stuck around for the end of the story?

I'm smart
I've come to the conclusion (yes, a long time ago, just go with it, ok?) that I'm not easy to live with. No, seriously! There is a reason I'm living with a dog and a fish to be sure. Not only do I hate doing dishes, I hate cleaning in general. This shows that not only am I not anal enough to be an accountant, I make a terrible host and roommate. Case in point, I never offer guests something to drink when they visit. Usually because the choice is water or milk, and I have no clean cups. Another example, the new roommate has only spent 30% of her time here. Every weekend: gone. Tonight: gone. Most days: gone to school. True, my own schedule could almost be summed up the same, but I can be found on the couch most every weekend.
So will this realization that I'm a sloppy bitch change my attitude? Doubtful. I'll still be crabby tomorrow and with a sink full of dirty dishes. Where are the paper cups when you need them.

Follow the kit
Ah, joy, yet another snow storm. Not so much snow as storm. I shouldn't complain, the power hasn't gone out (yet). The snow itself was nice and sticky, making it the perfect moment to use my Snowman Kit. I know, some sap is out there making a fortune off of selling a wooden box full of little wooden pieces. He probably also outsourced it to China, but I digress...
I built my man out of snow, partially because that's what the box said, and the fact I don't have one made out of flesh and blood. While I put the felt hat on last, wishing he would come to life and start to sing, I realized the pipe he would have been smoking wasn't going to help his health. No wonder his heart was out there in the open. Not to mention the red paint was smudging off, meaning his heart was bleeding. Gosh, what shoddy workmanship.
Seriously, my un-named snowman, who refused to come inside for cocoa (wonder why), will be greeting me every time I head out to the car. If you are thinking of coming by and checking him out, don't bring the little ones. See, to ensure I could reuse the kit next time I was in need of a 'man', I undressed him. That's right, I have a naked snowman. Now I'm really wishing he was real.

Guess who's legal!
It's Diezel's third birthday today. In dog years, he's 21. While that makes him legal to drink, I won't be sharing my Smirnoff with him any time soon.
I had planned on taking him to Steve & Sue's 2 for 1 sundae sale, but the weather is proving too cold for outdoor ice cream eating. Instead I'm planning on scrambled eggs with ham & cottage cheese along with some hot Italian sausages. For the moment he's content to enjoy the newest marrow bone added to his collection.
Tonight, as I once again sing him happy birthday, he'll get a scoop of vanilla ice cream. What would a birthday be without it?

Good Dog
Neb. Supreme Court spares life of dog
By KEVIN O'HANLON
Associated Press Writer
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- The state Supreme Court granted clemency Friday to a dog sentenced to death for fighting with a neighbor's pet.
The high court ruled unanimously that Murphy, an Alaskan malamute-shepherd mix belonging to Doug and Lorele Dittoe, should not be killed for causing "relatively minor injury" to the other dog after slipping out of the couple's fenced-in yard in 2001.
Murphy had been deemed dangerous by the county sheriff, and a judge ordered her destroyed.
"We conclude that the order for the destruction of the dog was not reasonable," wrote high court Judge John Wright. "The county court ... abused its discretion." He noted that the other dog's owner waited two days to have the dog seen by a veterinarian, and the bill was only $34.06.
The Dittoes adopted Murphy in 1994 from a friend who found her malnourished and lying in a ditch. After she fought with neighborhood dogs several times, the couple took her to a trainer and put up a six-foot fence. But she got out again when a gate was accidentally left open.
At a hearing before the high court last fall, the Dittoes' lawyer, Mark Fahleson, said authorities trying to kill the dog were demonstrating "a bloodthirsty vengeance once thought reserved for only the most cold-blooded of human killers." Both the sheriff and the dog's vet testified that they did not believe Murphy should be killed, he said.
But Assistant Attorney General Kim Klein told the court that Murphy's attacks on other dogs were "deliberate and vicious."
Still, Attorney General Jon Bruning did not seem particularly upset Friday that his office lost.
"Every dog has its day," he said.
As for the Dittoes, they are planning a party for Murphy.
"She might just get a steak," Lorele Dittoe said.

Do I look like chopped liver?
It seems like everyone who is geeky-cool has a Gmail account. Not that I've been vying for offered invites as people have solicited, but I had a reason. I had signed up to get a Gmail account way, way, back in time. I didn't want to screw up my place in line, didn't want anyone giving me 'cuts'. Well yesterday, my official invite to get a Gmail account arrived. After so much time waiting, I'm debating if I should even bother. How's that for a waste of time and electrons.

Morter board
I filed my intent to graduate today. If I want to keep taking classes I have to reapply to the college. So if I want to work towards, say, a computer degree, I have to reapply. I wonder if I'd end up with a new student id #?
I completely slacked off this week in regards to homework. In the one class I have no problems, I'm ahead in homework. In the class I'm clueless about, I haven't cracked the book.
As Wednesdays go, this one went off nearly as planned. School, work, home, walk, lunch, nap, study, school. The intended short power nap turned into 2 1/2 hour knock out. I laid down at 3pm. When I woke at 4pm to readjust pillow, I figured I would probably wake up in a few minutes. I was thinking 30 at most, turned out to be 90! Waking up at 5:30p was not good. That left just an hour to wipe the sleep from my eyes, the pillow marks from my face, and do homework for a class that starts soon. Yes, well, not quite success.
Since I was so well rested for class, my level of participation and comprehension was very high. That should help the subjective 'class participation' portion of my grade. I should probably point out the instructor doesn't know anybodys name. That should make grading fun.
During the first half of class I drank a whole bottle of Tropicana Strawberry Watermelon. If anyone know where I can buy this in bulk, let me know. So far I've only seen it in one vending machine at school. I really like it. Milen tried the Tropicana Peach Papaya after declaring he didn't like papaya. Turns out he like the juice. Than again it is only 5% juice and lots of sugar water. Think koolaid without the giant pitcher filled with ice bursting through a brick wall, and not so sticky sweet.
I almost missed my bathroom opportunity during the break. After all that juice it could have led to disaster! Fortunately I was able to bypass the potty line by rushing upstairs to the generally cleaner bathrooms. More people seem to be using them. Since the bathrooms on the lower floors are used more then they were ever intended for, running out of potty paper will push people to find other potties.
And that is all the wisdom I have to share with you today.

The saga continues
I feel Royally Jipped in regards to my "college" education.
HRM205 has a prereq. I have it, the rest of the class doesn't. The text for the class has no basic background information. It's like opening the middle of a 2000 page novel and having only one paragraph to figure out plot and character detail.
Ain't gonna happen.
What has been the biggest eye opener about HRM205 is how it shows the discrepancy among different degree programs. While nursing students fight to get into their program, and struggle everyday to stay, HRM students are seemingly handed their degrees. For example I've seen nursing students cramming over human anatomy in the middle of summer, while the instructor for HRM 205 stated on the first day of class that there was no final and it would be impossible to fail. I bet the anatomy students didn't get the same greeting.
When I asked the instructor of HRM205 why no one else seemed to have the prereq he told me that they (the students) were graduating and had received bad advising. I don't see how that's any kind of excuse. Just cuz HRM205 is only offered in spring, it doesn't mean Accounting 101 (the prereq) couldn't have been taken in the prior fall semester. After all ACC101 is offered practically year round due to its requirement in several degree programs (any business). Since HRM degrees, by definition, have 'Management', the fact that these students will receive a degree with 'management' on it and no course work related to it cheapens the degree that I will receive that says "Accounting" on it.
Now imagine those nursing students receiving a degree without having that anatomy class. It's all fine to bake a cake without a management class, it's another to take care of sick people not knowing a knee from an elbow.

Dog takes a dip, and humans come to rescue
Domino the Shih Tzu is saved after falling off Sandwich Boardwalk.
By CONOR BERRY
STAFF WRITER
SANDWICH - A foot-long dog in a fast-moving creek. What a nightmare!
That was the situation Robert Marks, 80, of Sandwich faced yesterday as his beloved dog Domino was nearly swept away after falling off the Sandwich Boardwalk.
Luckily for Domino, a black-and-white Shih Tzu out for a winter walk with his master, an anonymous couple from Wrentham and another man helped Marks rescue the small pooch, who was in the water for less than 10 minutes.
Marks said he stepped aside to let a man pass on the narrow boardwalk. But when he turned to check on Domino, he found a collar with no dog attached.
That's because Domino was in the creek, struggling to swim back to the boardwalk, a Sandwich landmark. The dog made his way to a beam beneath the boardwalk, but still was out of reach to the humans above.
That's when the Wrentham couple and the other man sprang to action. Marks and the couple held the man's legs while he dangled from the wooden walkway, stretching out his arms to the scared, shivering dog.
The man eventually was able to grab Domino. The dog was promptly wrapped in a blanket Marks keeps in his car and taken home for some TLC.
Patricia Marks, Robert's wife and a self-proclaimed animal lover, said the idea of perfect strangers lending a helping hand restored her faith in humanity.
"He wouldn't have lasted much longer in this weather," she said of Domino.
The dog spent yesterday recovering at his masters' Candlewood Drive home, lounging in a bay window dressed in a dog sweater, Patricia said.
"The way we treat animals is one of the redeeming features of the human race," Robert said.

All done
Finally made it to Outback Steakhouse. Milen volunteered. I was sure that ordering would total more then the amount on the gift certificate. Surprisingly, it didn't. The waitress picked up a 40% tip. Goodness knows I wouldn't have gone back to redeem $3.
I also picked up some fish stuff. Fish is going to be scrubbed up tomorrow after work. Don't tell him, he may decide to jump out of his tank.

Can you believe it?
Southern Snow Bird Watch Commander just called me to say all the students were pulled out of class to see the unveiling of an Orange County Chopper (from "American Chopper, the Series" fame). When I asked him if he took pictures, he said he didn't have his camera with him. I asked him if it was just the Discovery Channel camera crew, and he said it was Paul Sr, Paul Jr, and Mickey in attendance. Did he get an autograph? No!
Figures!

Sleepy weepy
Yesterday was mad crazy. I show up for HRM and after a few minutes one of the non-prereq students is asking me for help. Hello! Get a clue! I gave her the final number she should have, but her layout was so messed up, I couldn't figure out which she was doing: an income statement or a grocery list.
After being one of three students to turn in any kind of homework, I headed off to work. Another exciting morning that passed by quickly. After about three hours, it was back to school.
I met up with my unofficial adviser who recommended I talk to the career counselor. Oh, can you say Meyer-Briggs times 3? Yikes. I'm still thinking about that move.
I sauntered downstairs and waited for the challenge prof to finish up her class so she could give me the test. The closed book part took me a few minutes (20), mostly due to me being rusty on technical terms. It's the blinky thing, but that wasn't an answer choice. Go figure. The practical part took about an hour twenty and I had no problems setting my margins to .5 and adding hanging indents. Gesh, challenge me already!
Since I was done earlier then planned, I headed home for what I wished would be a nap. I laid down, thought happy thoughts, but didn't fall asleep. After a half hour I decided a walk would be better. Off me and Diez went. We ran into Ann, Sky & Jackie and walked around the block with them.
Back home, quick change of shoes, and back to school. That's right THREE trips to school in just one day. It's wrong, in so many ways.
On the way I stopped at the Dunkins at the highway. I tried to order a sandwich, but the woman said they didn't do sandwiches there. Huh? Think of the lost revenue! I took a coffee roll and Dunkaccino instead.
Class for me is hard. Being intelligent after 6pm is physically impossible. I'm going to struggle all semester if I don't reprogram my brain.
In the middle of class my phone rings!! Eck! I usually can't get a signal, so I don't bother to shut it off. Next time, Southern Snow Bird Watch Commander, please don't call on Wednesday night.
I called him back after class and ended up talking for a good half hour about geeky stuff. I now have gear to ship him. Yeah.
To bed, late, and up at 4am finding it impossible to fall back asleep. Thank goodness it's not a full-time course load this semester.

Oh say can you see
Did you catch this sight earlier today? And it was repeated in similar fashion this evening, if you happened to be out and about. Very stunning.
Well tomorrow I take the challenge. No, not the Special K challenge, the Microcomputer Applications challenge. Could you really see me sitting through a whole semester of 'this is a mouse'? No, neither could I. For the practical part of the exam I'm allowed to have notes, books, etc. I have none to bring. As long as I can get into the 'help' of what ever program it is, I'll do fine. I only need to get a P, in fact, it's only a P/F challenge. Maybe the Special K challenge would have been more fun.
Seriously, the challenge has my entire nap plans scrubbed for tomorrow. I may check out the library for some quiet comfy corner to catch a few minutes of meditation. Hopefully Milen will keep my awake for after hours accounting class. Then again this semesters instructor is much more engaging then last semester. Thank goodness for small miracle.

Anniversary commeth
Next month is the anniversary of this blog. Holy sheep-shit, batman!
So in the spirit of celebrating, and as a way to practice for my upcoming birthday (another holy shit, I'm getting old), I encourage you to check out my Amazon wish list (link to the left on the main page). I spent a few moments today purging items I had already procured through other outlets, and a few items no longer needed for various reasons. While the wish list is there, it's not complete. Amazon doesn't offer single guys, or winning lottery tickets. I also searched for a clue and/or a goal, but neither is currently available.
Damn Amazon!

No dreams for me to share
So what did I do this weekend, you ask?
Don't fake like you're interested. We both know you don't care.
Really? You really want to know? Ok
Friday night it was a quick stop at the MartK for Diez food and wire clips. Don't ask. I also skipped through Stop&Rob for British Muffins and OJ. I get home to find out I'm out of milk too.
Saturday I cut Diez's nails, and one a little too short. Poor guy bled everywhere. I felt SO bad. I've been doing this for two years and this is the first time I was off on guessing his squirm motion. Strangely he was pretty calm as I panicked about his blood loss. I'm going to pick up some stuff at the pet shop that will help me with my aggressive nail trimming. Sorry my little honey bunny, I'll try not to do it again.
I also sprayed his cut ear with Lanicane. That seems to be working pretty good. Amazing, since the cut on his nose seems to be bleeding each time I think it's finally healed.
I also did most of my homework Saturday. Thank goodness.
I also made a trip to the Falmouth Public Library to search the archives (microfish rules!) of the Falmouth Emptyprise from the 80's. I was in search of the article about the goats being killed. I guessed that 1982 was too early, and 86 would have been too late. I pulled out 83 and 84 from the draw. My ability to read directions should be questioned as it took forever to feed the 'fish. Bonus points for me in that the choice of 1984 was correct. Good thing the article was on the front page or I would have had to read a lot. I printed out a copy of the article but couldn't figure out where to pay my 10 cents. IOU Falmouth Public Library, 10 cents. Please charge it to my CLAMS card.
Once home I worked on framing the article, and filling up another picture frame with a collection of photos from the way-back machine. I still have two large frames to fill, but I'm out of good pictures. Go figure.
Sunday found me unwashed. All day. Why bother to clean up when I didn't have any human interaction planned. I look at it as conserving water. Also I conserved energy by doing nothing all day. A success all around.
See, you missed nothing. Aren't you glad you asked?

I tried
I really tried to like Splenda. I mean, this was suppose to be the great new sweetener, making food low carb, and low fat.
But I just couldn't get past the chemical taste.
Even when I taste foods with Splenda that I don't know have Splenda, I can taste it. And it makes me gag.
I'm sorry processed food manufacturers. You'll have to try again before I can endorse a chemical sweetener.
I hear sugar is still tasty.

Week one down
I'm all gung-ho about learning. I'm sure come Saturday morning there will be no gung left, just a nasty looking ho. Oh well.
I had Int. Acct II tonight for the first time. It's a new instructor to the school and his appearance disappointed Milen. Let's just say he's a stout guy. Even after Milen commented on his appearance, I pointed out he didn't have to look, only listen.
Seriously, we were both very happy with the instructors instruction. We learned more in the first hour then we had all last semester. This new instructor didn't read verbatim out of the book, and was more than pleased to answer questions. He did point out that we would be staying the full three hours though, which sucked, but his break was a full fifteen minutes, which was good.
So this weekend should find me puttering around the house avoiding homework with the nasty ho, wishing the gung had stayed around at least for the first weekend if to do nothing more then distract the ho.
As for my HRM Acct, I was the only one to do the homework. I had the right number for cash sales and I used GAAP, which apparently is not what is being used. I mean really, the guy couldn't write a simple T account on the board. What he did was far more confusing. The peak piss-me-off point was when he asked the class who had not had Acct I (the pre-req), four or five people raised their hands. Instead of telling them that they couldn't take the class (how they even signed up is a whole 'nother question...), he stated he would slow down his explanation of certain things. Oh geez.
I hear from the Office Accting folks that the first four weeks of their class is Accting I material. I couldn't stand DePalma for another semester. I'll suffer through HRM Acct where I can use my upper level accounting knowledge for evil.

Call now, don't delay
Someone at work is going to the Stuperbowl this weekend. Now, before you get all jealous, keep in mind it's not me. As if!
Why am I telling you all this? Well you need to call your bookie and change your choice. Turns out that every time this person at work has been able to attend the Stuperbowl, 'his team' has lost. LOST!
Since 'his team' this year is the Pats, they are due to lose. Call your bookie now, before it's too late.
And this little tip is free, You're welcome.
