November 29, 2004

This is the thing:

  • James got the house in Daytona. Woo-hoo!
  • work went by so fast, it was 1:30p before I noticed what time it was. Got lots done though!
  • my tv tuner card is finall connected. First test is going on right now
  • I don't want to go to school tomorrow
  • I've worked on my business plan. It still sucks. Diez is cute in his pictures.

Hey, does anyone wanna meet for court this week?

Almost there...

I finally got my ass in gear around noon. I know, it's ok to lounge, but shit, noon is crazy.

I've actually been multi-tasking. Since I have to take pictures of my dog coat making process, I've been making a dog coat for Diez (in bright orange) and taking pictures. Now that I've been working on if for two hours I realize I'm stuck. The last few things I need to finish the coat I don't seem to possess. So I've made a list and I'm going to brave Hyannis traffic. Sure, I could chance it with Walmart, but what if they didn't have what I needed? Eck, even more driving would ensue.

So me, my list, and one dead light bulb are off to Hyannis. Wish me luck in surviving!

PS: if anyone needs anything, call me.

Shhh...

Do you hear that?

Listen closely....

Hear it?

It's the sound of family departed leaving behind a vacuum of calm.

I hope you all enjoyed the holidays. Bring on the shopping!

Getting up there...

The photo gallery is quickly approaching the 3000 picture mark. This morning I uploaded pictures from my trip to DC as well as the Thanksgiving pictures from yesterday. It's a good think I picked up more space!

If anyone is on dial-up and doesn't have the ability to look at the pic gallery, let me know. All pictures are available on CD.

Gobble day entry

I learned Wednesday that Turkey gathering was not being held three miles down the road, but 2 hours drive away. I beleive that's called a change of venue. It sucks.

So instead of bopping into the car for a quick spin, it was all out packing and prepping. Then came the drive. In the rain. Which sucks.

We left before sis & company after leaving cousins and Diez with free run of the house. We first stopped for Dunkins and a newspaper. This put us behind sis & company. By the 95/128 interchange we caught up to them. Followed them, passed them, even honked at them. They didn't recognize us until 1/4 mile from the final destination. Very business like in their driving & traveling style.

Dinner wasn't served until 3pm. Conversation was non-stop politics. It makes me want to sleep.

Quick after dinner walk, then back to the house for desert. Departed much later. Mom and dad made a clean getaway, not even saying good-bye. We left next, leaving sis & company to pack and depart later.

We veered off the highway twice in search of after dark Dunkins with no luck. Even the third try at a 24 hour service area didn't find a staffed Dunkins.

Returning to the homestead, we were sure we'd be the last arriving parties. Amazinglty we still beat sis & company. Fortunately M&D had already arrived and kicked cousins and Diez outside for potties. I served them dinner.

And the turkey was good too.

Whatever happened to....

Scott Stapp??

The lead singer from Creed, for those of you who are behind on your VH1 Behind the Music watching.

I remember they interviewed him, the bandmates, his family, even his wife. Life seemed good, happily married, kids, reconciled with dad, etc. Last I heard he was divorced, drinking up a storm, and dropped from the band.

See, that's what fame and forture will do to you!

Posted by Rebecca at 12:36 PM | Comments (0)

Two things

1) I think my UPS guy at work is cute, in a handsome kind of way. Before you get all mushy, he's too old for me and married. Window shopping is allowed.
2) I found a crack dealer. Totally by accident, of course! I didn't know what the guy was doing and it un-nerved me greatly when I pulled into the parking lot of Dunkins and he pointed at me. WTF? Staring, doing a Peepee dance, and looking like he shouldn't be there as he kept peeking around the corner of the building. As I was leaving the Dunkins with my Dunckachino, I could hear him yelling at the guy holding the door open for me (the guy holding the door was also cute, in a getto-hoopdy-drivin with cornrows kind of way). I get in my car and the crack dealer is again looking at me, peeking around the corner of the building. I found out later at work that he knows Santa is watching and takes off running when he hears the sleigh bells ring.

Can't sleep

I've been awake since 2:30a (it's now around 4a). I'll be cranky all day.

Why can't I sleep? I think I realized the big mistake I made on my test but won't find out for sure until next week. This once a week class thing really sucks.

So far, at this gosh awful hour of the morning, I've let the dogs (cousins included) out for potty breaks, read some blogs via Sage RSS, and set up the last payment for an interest free credit card.

If you remember oh, to say, last year, you may recall I purchased a new mattress & boxspring set using one of those interest free for 14 month deals. I still have a few more months of free interest, but why tempt fate? I received an updated bill in the mail yesterday, so the balance was put into my online banking. I'm saving $115.89 in finance charges. Sweet.

The Sage RSS feeder is a sidebar extension that checks all the blogs I list for updates, then lets me read or browse them quickly in a clean text format. All the junk (ads, pics, etc) are filtered out. Each entry has a link to the original in case I want to see it or make comments. I really like this extension. I would rate it right up there with Adblock and IEPageview. Of course, these are just Firefox extensions (see me stick out my tongue?).

I'd also like to recommend the latest version of Firefox. They've gone 1.0 baby, yeah! Oh, and be sure to check out Geek News Central's latest podcast. Todd is relaxing to listen to, not all stuffy like the news heads. I find that even though I don't have a Pod, I still like to have him chatting in the background while I surf.

Well I'm gonna go try and get some more sleep. This afternoon I'm suppose to sew with sis. Should be interesting. Dad's baking pies. How wonderfully domestic we are!

Lala..lala.. lala (as sung by Babe)

I'll be going to work tomorrow (Wednesday). Can you see me jumping for joy? Look lower... lower... mmm, yeah.

It's end of month so it's pretty crazy trying to get crap done when there is a day less of work. Doesn't help that one of the bosses are MIA. Oh swell.

So tomorrow will go like this:

  • 5:30am: alarm will sound
  • 6:00am: breakfast
  • 7:15am: dash out door to school
  • 8am: attend class
  • 9:30am: show up at work
  • 12pm: lastest minute to leave work
  • 12:30p: home

I haven't decided if I should attend my evening class. And you'll notice my nap is missing. I'm sure it will be fit in there sometime.

Posted by Rebecca at 09:28 PM | Comments (0)

Quick! Hurry, run!

Well it's holiday week. I have big tests and big headaches.

The cousins arrived Sunday pm a few hours earlier then expected. Once again my baby Diez is being treated like the wicked step sister (yes, he's a boy, stay with the story, ok?). When the cousins sleep on the couch, Diez is banquished to the upstairs. He normally is upstairs, but usually there aren't all the other people and cousins in the house, so he feels left out. For a dog, he hates to be left out.

When the people don't want any dogs around, they put the cousins upstairs with Diez. The three of them pace around and the cousins whine. It's impossible to study for school with all this comotion.

While this may not be all that bad from your point of view, how do you feel about the 2:30am potty breaks? Yeah, I would have slept better if it hadn't happen. There was some story about cats growling and cousins getting fussy. Then the blame was placed on Diez "I could hear him pacing...". To that, I say, did you tell him 'go sleepy'? I've been telling him that each time he gets woken up by the cats (two stories down), so he knows what it means.

Otherwise, my routine has been negitivly impacted with the prerequisite 'family time'. I'm not the one on vacation here, so being asked to join the fun is difficult. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to spend time with Squirt and company, but everyone else seems to keep him pretty well occupied that my presence really isn't missed.

As it is, tonight's test is keeping me from a family ham dinner. Damn.

Tomorrow (Wednesday) I'm attending my morning alternative class. I don't have to, but since I missed a class two weeks ago due to my cold, I figure it will be good to attend. I then may have to go to work. As of this moment (I'm future posting here) I may have to come in. If not, I'm stopping at Kmart for some preshopping shopping. A toaster oven and socks. Then a stop at Newbury's for CDs. Then home.

That's when I can spend time with Squirt. Watch him have a full day of activities already planned.

(cousins = Spooky Dog & Jade Boxer)

I can't get there...

First off, no court will be held on Wednesday. Sorry, but I have to work.

Sometime tomorrow the population of the house will double. The dog population will triple. How so? Sis, B-i-L, Sean and cousin dogs arrive tomorrow, fresh from the DC suburbs. That means I must frantically study today, and whatever time I have tomorrow, for my big accounting test Tuesday night.

How am I doing so far? I'm about half way through the study guide. I started around 9am and have dealt with many interruptions since. Mom is going through cleaning and prepping rage. Since I have many of the items she's looking to furnish the new spare room with, I've been asked several times to stop what I'm doing. At one point I just gave up and took the shower I desperately needed. And Diez also scored a walk.

Now I'm going to fortify myself with some lunch, maybe take a nap, then get back to my scool book. I had to email Milen for some help because my awesome Palm business calculator doesn't seem to understand one of my problems. Oh well.

Sorry I can't blog some more for you.

Builders dream

Record haul of fake Lego to go up in smoke

November 19, 2004

HELSINKI, Nov 19 (Reuters) - More than 10 tons of Chinese-made plastic toy bricks will go up in smoke when the largest customs haul of illegal imitation Legos ever seized is incinerated, a Finnish customs official said on Friday.

The bricks were crushed on Thursday and will be burned later to produce energy for the southern Finnish town of Lahti, the customs officer said. Scandinavian environmentalists shouldn't worry: no toxins were found in the toys.

The phoney Legos, totalling more than 54,500 fake sets, were seized by Finnish customs last year en route to Russia, said the Danish company that makes the genuine toys. REUTERS

Fifth wife

Last night I stayed up watching PBS. Let me defend myself.

Wednesday afternoon I happen to catch the first in a series about Henry the 8th and his many wives. The episode was the for the first and second wife. Very good PBSing.

So last night when I happened upon the next episode, I was sucked in. I mean, isn't this important? Don't I need to know this stuff?

The next two wives lasted an hour. Which brings me to my open-eyed threshold of 10pm. I convinced Diez to have a potty break, while I relocated to the bedroom.

See, the next hour was going to wrap up the last two wives, and they looked to be real winners.

With the sleep timer on the TV set, and Diez softly snoring, PBS served up Henry's teenage wife. And Henry was getting up there. Considering people back then didn't live long, I can only imagine how it would compare to the big May-December romances found these days.

The teenager turned out to be a whore. Or at least a whore for back then. She was beheaded and her family was all arrested. Sweet.

After that, I fell asleep!

So I can't tell you about the last wife. Or any of the kids (I think there were three in all). All I know is that I'd stay away from the royal court if I were you. Those people don't seem to have all the screws tightened down, if you know what I mean.

Just look at Charles this past week. I rest my case.

back to the future

I wanted to tell my blog buddies, Jesse and Milen, that I set up the 'future' posting feature.

If you use the website to post blog entries, down at the bottom is the 'Publish, Draft, Future' (Post Status) option. You would pick 'future' enter a time you want the entry to post for (in the future of course) and click save.

What does this mean? You could write a weeks worth (or a months worth) of entries and set them to show up in the 'future' at the date & time you enter.

How does this work? There is a little job running every 15 minutes on the website that checks to see what entries were marked as 'future' and if their times have passed. So if you set a blog entry with a date & time of 11:07am on November 20th, the little job that runs at 11:15am on November 20th will see your blog entry is no longer in the 'future' and will add it to your blog.

So just be sure to mark the entry as a 'future' post, and set the date and time you want. If you fail to do one or the other, it won't work right.

Note: 'future' posting doesn't work using w.bloggar. Sorry Milen.

Oh my gosh, lunch!

This morning, on the way to work, I stopped at Star Market for begals. The 'prepared' food items are right near the baked goods section, and the Uno's pizza was calling my name. And it was screaming.

So of course, I bought it.

This morning at work was an absolute zoo. Trying to get stuff together before the noon drop dead hour. There were the usual last minute rush items, then there were the last millisecond rush items. I finally came up for a Hot Pocket at 11:30a.

I typed up some memos and such, and saved a fax from faxing to the wrong person. I was told someone would have slept better all those years if they had known I was in the Navy. Strangest thing I've been told this year.

I thought I was going to be off on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, now it turns out I'm not. If I don't come in and at least complete payroll, no one will get paid. My payroll backup person said she doesn't have time to do it.

I love being low person on the todum pole.

My screaming pizza turned out to be more then I could handle. It could have been the Hershey milk shake I had (cookies 'n cream, which tasted just like cookies 'n cream) with all of its 280 calories. Or the hot pocket, which I'm sure has loads of calories. Ultimately my screaming Uno's pizza with 310 calories paid the price and went only half digested. So guess what?

Diez gets a doggie bag.

No wonder he loves me so much! He gets not just regular puppy food, he gets left over screaming Uno's pizza. I hope he's not disappointed with the fact it's just cheeze toppings.

Just one thing...

This morning, while driving into school, I passed a small road repaving project. The irony was that the hard workers had parked their cars, their Mercedes cars, four in all, on the side of the road. I'm again reminded I'm in the wrong line of work.

Meeting with Jesse was good, but set me up with an itch for shopping. We visited the Old Navy and Macy's online sites in search of winter jackets. She also told me about a Dougie sighting, which was very funny.

After our meet up, I headed to Home Depot. I picked up the little light socket adapters that add outlets. This is so I can put out Christmas lights when it's time.

I then stopped at Old Navy for shirt. Six in all. Four V necks, and two crew necks.

From there I was RI Job Lot bound. I just needed hot sauce. I bought that and so much more. Doggie toys since the cousins are coming next week, a moon chair because at $25 it's a steal, and ground hot pepper in bulk.

Then I was determined to get home, so I made a stop at Stop & Rob for wingettes (they are on sale this week), moo juice, and OJ.

Cooking the wingettes was nice since the sun lasted long enough to allow grilling. Eight pounds of grilled wingettes later, and even the dog pen is half racked. Yummy time.

Right at this moment, I'm watching brain surgery on PBS. Crazy. I want some biologic glue!

Brother has called me with news from school (it hasn't started yet)

Turns out that classes have been pushed back a week due to hurricanes. Now his housing seach is messed up. Only time and patiance will tell what happens. He did switch his second manufacturer to Harley so he'll be a well rounded mechanic.

No, not really
I was approached just before class by someone that said my job sounds really interesting. Then she asked where I worked. I don't like to talk about where I work with strangers. I just kind of blew her off.

Speaking of work.. FoxNews came by this morning to interview Christy. They received a box of KrispyKremes for the ride back to Boston. I don't know for sure when the inteview will air, so I can't say when to fire up your DVR's. No, I'm not in it.

From yesterday's Patriot Ledger

Grandma mauled fighting to save her dog

By JAMES COMPTON
The Patriot Ledger

PEMBROKE - Eighty-two-year-old Kathleen Rehs wasn't thinking about her own safety when she decided to get into a wrestling match with the feisty pit bull mixed-breed dog next door.

The 100-pound Pembroke grandmother loves her tiny dog Buddy so much that she came to his rescue without hesitation, snatching him from the jaws of the pit bull-mix, only to find herself on the ground and struggling for her own life.

‘‘I didn't think twice. Then I couldn't get away,'' Rehs said last night from her room at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth.

The mauling on Thursday left Rehs with injuries to her right shin, forearm and leg. According to the hospital, Rehs received sutures in her right shin and right forearm, muscle was visible on her right leg and flesh was exposed on her right arm.

‘‘She's lucky to be alive,'' said Jonathan Lovins, a doctor at South Shore Hospital.

On Friday surgeons cleaned and closed wounds, including the 5-inch gash on her right shin, and performed a skin graft .

The attack came after Buddy, a 15-pound bichon frise, escaped Thursday afternoon from his fenced-in yard on Center Street and wandered into the unfenced neighboring yard of Isis, a female pit bull, German shepherd and Maine coonhound mix owned by Paul Glover. Isis was chained to a large tree.

Isis was shaking the tiny dog by its neck, and Rehs decided to rescue the family pet.

During the attack, Rehs said she waved and yelled to passing cars, but none stopped. She eventually rolled down the yard's slight incline away from Isis.

Rehs crawled about 400 feet to her home, where she telephoned for help.

Rehs and Buddy, both severely injured, waited in the kitchen.

‘‘I saw the EMTs pull in,'' Glover said. ‘‘Being concerned for my neighbor, I went over and talked with her.''

Glover said the accident was unfortunate, but it happened on his property and Isis was ‘‘completely restrained'' to a 4-foot-thick pine tree with a 1-inch-thick chain.

Isis is registered and up to date on her required shots, Glover said, and is quarantined for 10 days. The quarantine is a precaution taken by animal control while rabies tests are performed.

Pembroke selectmen were unaware of Thursday's attack, but board members Terry Finnegan and Arthur Boyle said they would discuss it at tonight's meeting.

‘‘We'll definitely look into it,'' Boyle said. ‘‘There's no question.''

Buddy underwent surgery at VCA South Shore Animal Hospital in South Weymouth for a punctured lung, broken ribs and lacerations. He returned last night to his Center Street home.

James Compton may be reached at jcompton@ledger.com.

The sad part is, Isis will probably be put to sleep for no other crime then defending her plot of land. If anything, Buddy should be quarentened in the house until the fence is reenforced.

And I'm still trying to figure out why the selectman in town need to "look into" this issue. If anyone can tell me, please do share.

Let me tell you....

Bras from Walmart are not the same as bras from Lane Bryant. The price tag is your first clue.

The Tree is featuring Christmas stuff. Get it now while selection is good. (and it's pretty much the same stuff in Hyannis as in Falmouth)

Studying helps. I got a 100 (after scale) on my BusiLaw test.

My cold is still in the 'hack up stuff' faze. Sometimes I cough so hard I pee my pants.

My left ear is stiff clogged. If still clogged on Wednesday I may go visit the school nurse. Maybe she'll send me home sick.

Brother left at 5am for a flight to FL. House hunting for a few days. Someone wish him luck.

Folks are back from DC. They knew where the wheel barrel was. Someone should have told me.

It's getting cold out. I think it's a safe bet that if I pack my summer clothes now, I won't need them for a few months.

Diez is a spaz. Let me go save Cow from dissection.

Talk into my good ear

Yesterday I shopped at Wally World with the brother. I'm not sure why.

Today I find my left ear is extremely clogged up and starting to hurt. I hate this damn cold. I didn't take any meds yesterday or last night. I just want to feel good.

For now, I guess I'll just try to finish up laundry. I mean, really, what else should I be doing when it's cold out.

Cold, hard, update

So I've been struggling with my cold this week. Yes, it continues to plague me. I take niquil, and that knocks me out, but I don't wake up rested. So why do I take it? So I don't know how much I struggle to breathe while I'm sleeping. My throat is so full of phlem I can't breathe. And yesterday I started coughing up stuff. Don't ask me what it is, but I'm sure there is a scientist out there needing it for a study.

As for my ears, let's just say I'm worried about permanent damage. They are blocked, clogged, and constantly popping. That's just when they aren't sloshing. There is a dull roar in my ears also. I can't hear it when there are other things making noise (tv, radio, people), but in the silence of the bathroom, I find the roar to be quite loud. Only time will tell if my outstanding hearing will be restored. Maybe this is why older people have a hard time hearing... too many colds have damaged their ears.

And the nose blowing has finally subsided. Oh it's still happening, but not nearly the tissue filling event that it was earlier this week. Which is good, because I was running low on tissues.

So now that I'm on my way to recovery, everyone that has been around me during this past week should have a nice weekend, as my cold spreads.

Hahaha!

London anyone?

British Airways is offering round-trip, economy class seats from Boston to London for $218 per person, taxes and fees not included. Regular fares on that route start at $388 per person.

British Airways is also selling a three-night package that includes coach air fare from Boston to London, a three-night hotel stay, afternoon tea, and a gift certificate to British retailer Harrods for $419 per person.

The airline is requiring the tickets to be purchased through its website by Dec. 16 and a Saturday night stay is required.

How happy?

I was listening to the local talk radio yesterday morning. First off, I think the two guys that host the morning show are close minded old fogies (no offense to the regular old fogies out there). So yesterday, I'm not even sure what the topic was, but they wished some caller a happy Veterans Day. How is Veterans Day happy? It's like saying happy Memorial Day. Or happy 9/11. Veteran's Day is a day for remembrance of those that served. It's not a day of cookouts, parties, etc.

Later in the evening I happen to be watching the news when they showed Bush at the tomb of the unknown soldier 'placing a wreath'. I kind of wish he had actually 'placed' the wreath, rather then just walked with it as the Marine carried it. He looked like a weakling. I hope his handlers prep him better for next year.

I hope you all had a solemn day of remembrance yesterday. Now you can party and cookout with your friends.

Death due to ???

My Palm M130 won't fire up. This isn't good. I really need the business calculator for the test in two weeks. I'm hopeful that the problem is a dead battery. The thing is, it has one of those stupid recharge in the cradle batteries, and I have to wait to see if any juice helps it. I had it in an Incipio case (they don't make them any more) and that's done right by me through my first Palm (which Milen is in custody of), so I'm not sure what happened. Granted it did travel to DC with me and rode through the Xray machines, but that didn't kill it for the trip to FL back in January. I guess it must have just had enough. Wish my color screen baby good luck.

**Update: Yeap, that appears to be the problem. An all night rest in the cradle should have it feeling peppy tomorrow. Phew!

Cold shoulder

Am I suppose to eat if I have a cold? I know everything will taste wrong, but I don't want to be wasting away. Not that that would ever happen....

Anyone wanna place bets of James hooking me up with more OJ?

Posted by Rebecca at 10:58 AM | Comments (0)

observations

The last five months of entries are missing, I know. If anyone out there has a local install of perl and is willing to run a conversion script, let me know. I have the files in HTML, but need to convert them to an importable text format. I have the script too.

The new version of MT looks very clean (display, color wise). I just shut off my pings because I haven't installed blacklist (yet).

I now have more space on the website. Hopefully I can get everyone moved around before it becomes an issue again. And if I could get the conversion I mentioned in the first para of this entry done, it would save even more space.

I emailed in sick to school and called in sick to work. My head feels like there is wet cement packed into my sinuses. I'm starting to cough, which means all the icky germs are becoming airborne.

I think I need to post a bio-hazzard warning sign on my bedroom door.

DC wrap-up

Sean slept until about 7a when I opened the door and he picked his head up looking at me. I went into his room and turned open the mini blind. Sean was ready to get out of the crib, holding his arms up at me. After a dipper change it was off to the kitchen for morning milk. We mellowed on the couch watching Jack Hannah (wow, is he loosing hair). I tried to give him some muffins, but he seemed more interested in crumbing it all over the couch.

Jen and Jeff came home a little after 8a. I had a chance to read some ads from the paper, but then it was time to scrub and go.

A stop at CVS for cough drops and an hour ride to the airport. Just as we hit the airport property a VERY mean looking cop steps out into the road from the left shoulder pointing as someone to pull over. Which Jen did. Apparently it wasn't her they were after and we were waved on a minute or so later. I was early to the airport, but that was good.

Let me give you some pointers to checking in at BWI... go through the security checkpoint for the B gates. That section of the terminal is only half utilized since A is under construction and the connections use up a few of the B gates. There is no line at the B gates, unlike C (where most of Southwest flights are) which has a line for days. It's actually a line to go wait in another line.

Something odd I observed at the checkpoint was that while sneakers didn't set off the metal detector and you are not 'required' to take them off, security causes a stink if you choose not too. If you choose not to take off your shoes they will have you walk through the detector (which doesn't go off), step to the side, have you remove your shoes, call over a supervisor, stand with your hands on a railing (like the cops are about to frisk you) and delay your progress considerably. Just cuz you don't wanna take off you kicks. A guy that had been a good five people ahead of me in line was still getting the treatment when I left the checkpoint area.

I had some food while I waited. Over by the B gates, of course. I did get in line after a while and was fourth in group A. There was a younger woman in the front of the line talking on a cell phone. An older couple was behind her and in front of me. Their friends were behind me. As we walk down the jetway, the young woman is saying goodbye to her caller. The older man in front of me is gripping about the young woman on the cell phone. I just want on the plane. We were joining a flight that had come up from West Palm Beach and I fully expected a packed house. Surprisingly only about a dozen were continuing north. Smart? Maybe not.

The flight was cool. The pilot was from Chatham and pointed out some sights along the way. I took pictures out the window all the way even after they said to turn off all portable electronic devices. What harm could my camera possibly do?

Back at TF Green airport and I hopped on the shuttle bus home. My left ear still hadn't popped from the plane's decent. I was dropped off at my car and went to pay the parking lady. I think they found the slowest employee to work all by herself. I pulled up to the window and had to wait for her. And wait. I'm not sure what she was doing, but involved talking to herself.

The ride home was fairly uneventful with the exception of loosing track of my tissues. I had to cancel my late lunch with Milen as I was feeling very wiped. At home and someone had left Diez outside to redecorate the pen with holes. (note: fill those in)

Slow pace of DC

Sean may get up early, but he isn't fully awake and functioning. First, he likes to drink milk and snuggle. Then he just kind of hangs out. Being a geek I would compare this to and old 386 computer being turned on, it takes forever to be of any use.

We all just kind of lounged around, eating scones Jeff made for breakfast. They were not all that bad. I would have soaked them in more honey, but that's just my sweet tooth talking.

At 10:30a Sean went down for a nap. That's the life! I also took a nap, and I think Jen did too. Jeff played on the computer (the one I was suppose to fix). 11:30a and I decided to shower. You can only lounge around in pjs with white dogs for so long.

After we all get ready, we drove downtown for lunch at a Thai restaurant. I can usually find a nice basil chicken to eat, but this Thai restaurant didn't have that on the menu. I ended up with chicken in a spicy sauce with green beans (fresh, not canned) and some rice. Pretty good. I did my best to finish. Jen wasn't feeling well and won a doggie bag. Her dogs didn't get to enjoy it, by the way.

Sean was well behaved during lunch, but didn't really like the fried tofu, throwing most of the pieces on the floor. Even though not his best behavior, we all headed to the park for a quick trip around the playground.

Back to the house and Jen runs through last second details. As she is about the head out the door for a night of fun, she runs through her personal checklist of things to bring. The one item almost left behind was the dress. Off they drove.

Sean hung out, playing in the draw that held the vcr tapes. Tossing them out of the draw, sitting and standing on them. Then he wiggled over the dog bed and unplugged the light (Jen, you might want to look into that). I let him. What's the worse that could happen?

I finally put him down for a nap around 4:30p, and that lasted until about 5:15p. I cooked the meatloaf Jen had left for us, and heated the veges. I put Sean in his highchair and served him dinner.

I know Jen and Jeff let him 'feed' the dogs, but I wasn't going to let him. Also, tossing of the sippy cup wasn't allowed. Jen, Sean seemed a little surprised when I told him 'no', don't you people tell him that?

He did really good eating, fingers and all. After dinner, Jade cleaned Sean's plate and I washed Sean's hands. Another reason I couldn't have kids... sticky fingers.

Sean entertained himself, complete with a poopy break. Around 7:30p Sean had a tubby. He didn't throw the toys out of the tub like Jen had said he would do. He did find a whistle and in the small bathroom the sound was eardrum shattering.

All throughout the evening my nose had been running. I'd blow it, it run some more. Insane. I hate feeling a cold coming on.

I took Sean from the tub and whisked him to the bedroom. I pj'd him up and together we headed for the kitchen for bedtime milk.

While Sean may have gone to bed at 8p, I stayed up trying to fix the computer. It's XP, which doesn't help. The basic things of selective startup in msconfig didn't help. I think the XP OS is damaged. There is a ten minute 'pause' during bootup, long before the startup programs are called. They also have lost the use of the dropdown in IE's address bar. They have Norton's and it's sorta running (won't update program files, just virus definitions). How did I tackle the computer? I would try something, restart, then go to bed. If I was still awake five minutes later when it came back on, I'd look at it again. I'm sure there was more I could have done, but time was limited and a ten minute reboot really cuts into that.

During the night, my nose became out of control. At one point I woke up choking on mucus. Nasty.

Off to DC

I worked. I couldn't focus. The weather outside was windy and gusty. The windows in the office were rattling and it seemed as if the whole building would topple over soon.

At four I couldn't take the anticipation any longer. I checked the oil in my car one last time then drove off to the airport. Via the gas station of course.

I made it all the way to Fall River and then traffic stopped. And it stayed that way until I was on the Braga Bridge. That bridge has been under rehab for years now.

Traffic broke loose and was good until Providence. I hadn't even reached the S curves when again traffic stopped. I was getting very nervous as it was an hours from my flight. After the 95 split traffic was moving along and I made it to the airport on time.

Phew!

I parked in long term parking and the shuttle guy picked me right up at my car. Sweet! He asked if it was going to be windy tomorrow and I told him it was. He then started talking about raking leaves, blah, blah, blah, and the other passenger in the shuttle didn't say a word the entire ride.

At the terminal I walk straight to the metal detector lines. This young man with a fleece pull over asks to see my ticket and passport. I kind of hesitate, like who the hell are you. He apologized when he realized his id badge (he was with Southwest) was tucked into his coat. He pulled it out and let me go on my way. The metal detector people asked me to take my laptop out of the bag and I did. I asked if I needed to take out my digital camera or palm pilot and she said no, just the laptop. Well scanning the bag with the digital camera and palm pilot took much longer then the laptop.

Put my shoes on and off I rush to find my gate. Stop at the potty first, then get in the A line. I thought I was in line, but apparently the man with three boys and a box of legos didn't. They camped right out in the middle of the concourse, turning the line of A passengers right around me. Grrr!!!

That's ok, I cut them off when boarding was call.

The boarding was quick. I ended up with a mean guy next to me. I had picked a window seat and another woman sat down in the aisle seat. Then the guy came up to her and said that it was a full flight and she better get use to it, so move. No joke, he was snippy and nasty. Oh joy.

I worked on my homework during the flight. About time. The snippy guy read his book then turned out his light and faked sleeping. He also took up both arm rests. Good thing I can mouse with both hands.

The approach took forever! The flight crew said to turn off electrical items, so I did. And then we kept going. And going. Slowly lower and lower. After passing what seemed like two dozen football fields, we landed. Phew.

The snippy guy asked if I was getting off. Yes! After a few minutes he got up to let me out, but he was all huffy about it, like I was putting him out.

I got of the plane but had no idea where to go! Finally I see the sign to the baggage claim and I head that way. At the security checkpoint, I see no ride. I head down to baggage claim since I hope that's where my ride is. I finally see her, leaning against the stair rail.

We headed out to the parking garage. First hour is free. Of course it's dark outside so I didn't see anything. We get to the house about an hour later and Jade and Spooky are there, happy for a new person to give them attention.

We all chatted for a bit, and watched Sean sleep for a minute, then off to bed.

I settle into the bed, which is tucked into the finished basement by a half bath. What no one warned me about was the furnace is also tucked in the basement by the half bath. So just as I'm drifting off I hear a noise like a switch except really loud. Then a whoosh, like a small jet engine. That goes on for a little while, then the switch shut off, I assume, and the noise stopped. Great, not that bad of a noise really. Then I hear it, the sound of the furnace doing something else that sounded like sneakers in a dryer. Ca-clunk, ca-clunk. Over and over. This probably won't be as easy a noise to sleep through, but when you are tired, you can sleep through just about anything.

Can I breathe now?

I woke up with a stuffy nose. Just one side, the right, and it was up in the sinus cavity, not running anywhere. This on top of my molar that is trying to get out of my mouth on a one-way nonrefundable ticket. So I thought I'd try to sing this morning. I turned on the Corrs and ended up whistling along because apparently I have some post nasal drip.

Yeah.

Tailgating

Driving home from class last night and as I passed the intersection of Osterville Rd and Rte 28 I see a cop had pulled over a sedan on the opposite side of the road. Well we all slow down, naturally. Personally, I continued to drive slow (about 40 to 45 mph) because I was darn sleepy and afraid I was swerving.

Down the hill we head, four cars in a line. I'm in the third spot followed by a minivan, two sedans in front of me. At the intersection of Prince Cove Rd, Rte 149 and Rte 28 there is a cop sitting on Prince Cove. We all slow down even more and the cop becomes car number 5 in the line as we inch through the lights at Stop & Shop Cotuit.

Across from Chad's Ice Cream the speed limit sign says 50. I have yet to hit that speed the entire ride. I can barely see the cop behind the minivan because he's riding the ass end. As I hit the bottom of the hill where the pumping station is, I can see the minivan pulling to the side of the road and the cop blowing by him. The cop is now accelerating and in no time is flashing his blue lights at me as I climb the hill. I turn on my blinker as I pull over to the side of the road. The cop then blows by me in some kind of rage. He then rides up on the sedan in front of me and that car pulls over by the Low-Low-Low gas station. Car number one is now making a left turn into Mariner Circle (that name may be wrong). The sedan driver seems to panic as the cop nearly collides with his tail end, but the cop follows the sedan through the left turn, and then finally keeps his blue lights flashing.

Since the cop couldn't know what the plates were on the number one car, and we never got above the speed limit, what the heck was he pulled over for? I didn't see any lights out (headlights, tail lights) and the sedan even used a blinker in making the left hand turn. And what was up with the 'stealth' tactics used by the cop to pass cars 2 through four? He didn't turn his blue flashers on and keep them on, which would have made us all get out of his way. Instead he was seriously, and dangerously, tailgating and 'flashing' his blue lights for just a moment (like you would flash you highbeams on the highway when someone is going 55 in the left lane) to move us to the side.

The whole situation seemed completely wrong.

What's in your freezer?

Did I mention the freezer was on the fritz? Well it was. A few weeks back there was the freezing milk controversy. Why did some milk freeze and other containers of milk did not? The puzzle was never solved. Following the debate, the ice cream was soft. Crank up the themometer, and the ice cream was softer. Friday I cranked up the themometer all the way and by the time I got home from work, half of the items in the freezer were thawed out. I made a last ditch effort to transfer much of the stuff from my fritzy freezer to the chest freezer in the basement.

Today the fridge fix-it guy came by. We learned that the fridge I bought new in 2001 was actually manufactured in 1995. And we learned that GE fridges built in 1995 are notorious for coolant leakage. And that fix, the fix-it guy said, wasn't worth fixing. Gotta give him credit for being honest.

So dad went to the Depot in Wareham and found a fridge that could be decribed at 'dented'. It turns out someone used a box cutter to open the cardboard shipping box to check for damage and ended up causeing a hairline scratch. For that the fridge, still completely wrapped with the exception of this one cut, was discounted 10%. I had a hard time finding the scratch, just for the record.

Now I can go back to eating ice cream.

**** Earlier in the day ****

On my way home from work I stopped by the MartK for some: motor oil, wiper fluid, wiper blade, discount halloween candy, and a partidge in a pear tree. They were out of the partidges, but the candy had a sign saying 50% off. I grabbed six bags of 'glow-in-the-dark' candy. Two each of snickers, 3 Musketters, and Milky Ways. At the check out the girl scans the first bag and I stop her saying that they are 50% off. She called the front desk woman, Jean, who says it's only 'select' halloween candy. I'm not sure how 'select' one can be about halloween candy, but I think 'glow-in-the-dark' is pretty specific. I mean, are you going to buy it for Thanksgiving? Valentine's Day? I don't think so. I ended up not buying any of the non-select halloween candy at full price.
